Urban Shihemi, November 1, 2025 The Government of Kenya has expressed deep sorrow following a devastating mudslide that struck Marakwet East Constituency early Saturday morning, claiming 22 lives and leaving dozens missing as heavy rains continue to batter parts of the country. In an official statement, the Government spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura extended heartfelt condolences to the affected families, assuring them of the Government’s unwavering support during this difficult time. “The Government is fully committed to supporting the affected communities and families and is working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents,” read the statement. A massive multi-agency rescue and recovery operation is ongoing, comprising teams from the Ministry of Interior and National Government Administration, Ministry of Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes, the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, National Youth Service, the National Disaster Operations Centre, Kenya Red Cross Society, and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH). So far, 22 bodies have been retrieved and evacuated to Eldoret. Twenty-one people among them 14 adults and 7 children are receiving treatment at MTRH. Meanwhile, 29 persons remain missing, with search and rescue efforts continuing at full pace. According to the Government spokesperson, the government has mobilized relief supplies and medical aid for displaced families. The State Department of Special Programs has distributed 600 bags of rice, 520 bags of beans, 1,000 blankets, 300 mattresses, 30 boxes of soap, and 10 bales of sanitary towels. The tragedy has disrupted national examinations in the region. However, the Ministry of Education has assured that exams will proceed without interruption.
