Jamia Mosque Nairobi has continued its long-standing tradition of supporting vulnerable families during the holy month of Ramadhan, marking seven consecutive years of distributing dry ration iftar packages under its social responsibility program.
The initiative, which targets needy households across Nairobi and its environs, has this year expanded significantly due to rising demand fueled by economic hardships.
The packages, containing essential food items such as Rice 10kgs, Maize 8kg,Sugar 5kg, Beans 5kg, wheat 8kg, oil 3litres, Salt 1kg, are aimed at enabling families to observe the sacred month with dignity.
Speaking during the distribution exercise to the widows in Gachie Nairobi, Aboobakar Nazir, Finance Officer at Jamia Mosque Committee (JMC), said the program has grown steadily over the years and has become a lifeline for many struggling families.
“This program has been a success, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to stop serving hot meals at the mosque. We had to rethink our approach to ensure we still reach those in need,” said Nazir. “The dry ration model has allowed us to support more families directly in their homes.”
Before the outbreak of Covid-19, the mosque hosted hundreds of fasting Muslims daily for communal iftar meals within its premises. However, public health restrictions and safety concerns during the pandemic led to the suspension of the hot meal program.
In response, Jamia Mosque Nairobi shifted to distributing dry foodstuffs, a move that has since proven both efficient and impactful. According to mosque officials, the new approach has enabled better planning, wider outreach, and greater flexibility in assisting beneficiaries.
Nazir noted that the current economic climate has seen an increase in the number of people seeking assistance, prompting the mosque to scale up its efforts.
“Many families are facing financial strain. The high cost of living has made it difficult for them to afford basic food supplies. As a mosque, we feel obligated to step in and ease their burden during Ramadhan,” he added.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude, saying the support has enabled them to prepare iftar meals for their families without added financial pressure.
Jamia Mosque Nairobi has called upon well-wishers, businesses and faithful congregants to continue supporting the program through donations, emphasizing that collective responsibility is key to sustaining the initiative.
