Garissa Airstrip Expansion Set to Transform Northern Kenya’s Trade and Travel

By Urban Shihemi , February 11, 2026

President William Ruto has inspected the ongoing modernisation of Garissa Airstrip, describing the project as a transformative investment that will unlock greater economic opportunities across Northern Kenya.

During the inspection tour, the President said the expansion and upgrade of the airstrip marks a significant step in strengthening infrastructure in the region and enhancing connectivity between Garissa County and the rest of the country.

The project will see the runway expanded and upgraded to accommodate larger aircraft and increased flight operations. Once completed, the improved facility is expected to boost passenger traffic by more than 200,000 annually, positioning Garissa as a key transport hub in the region.

President Ruto noted that the modernised airstrip will open up Northern Kenya to new investment prospects, facilitate trade, and promote tourism. He emphasised that improved air connectivity will also enhance access to essential services, including medical evacuations, security operations, and humanitarian support.

The expansion is expected to stimulate local enterprises, including hospitality, transport, and retail sectors, while creating employment opportunities during and after construction. Local leaders welcomed the project, saying it will help integrate the region more fully into the national economy.

Garissa Airstrip serves as a critical gateway to Northern Kenya, an area with vast potential in livestock production, trade, renewable energy, and cross-border commerce. Stakeholders say the modernisation will strengthen the region’s competitiveness and attract both domestic and international investors.

The government has prioritised infrastructure development as part of its broader strategy to spur economic growth and promote equitable development across all counties.
