Among the dead was journalist Hassan Eslaih, whose death totals the number of journalists and media workers at 232 according to a report by the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs’ Costs of War project. After a major international hunger monitor warned that the entire population of the enclave is at risk of famine, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an end to Israel's blockade of Gaza. Following the release of a US-Israeli soldier by Hamas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced plans to send mediators to Qatar for truce talks. According to his office, Israel will postpone plans to intensify its military campaign in Gaza until after US President Donald Trump's impending trip to the area. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports at least 52,862 Palestinians killed and 119,648 injured since Israel’s offensive began. The Government Media Office estimates over 61,700 dead, including thousands still buried under rubble and presumed dead. The war, triggered by Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel that killed 1,139 people and saw over 200 taken hostage, has now entered its 18th month with no durable ceasefire in sight.
