Jamia Mosque Nairobi Blood Drive Collects Over 100 Pints

Urban Shihemi, 4 November 2025 Jamia Mosque Nairobi in collaboration with the Tusmo Ogle Foundation successfully collected more than 100 pints of blood during a donation drive held on 25 October 2025. The initiative was part of the mosque’s centenary celebrations of daawah and service to the Muslims in the country and abroad. Speaking today at Jamia Mosque Nairobi, Executive Officer, Said Abdallah, announced that the blood collected has been distributed across various government hospitals. He noted that the drive supported by Kikao Active Citizens, Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service (KNBTS) and UmulKultum Foundation will continue to bolster critical supplies and help patients in urgent need. “We as Jamia Mosque Nairobi want to thank each and everyone who donated their blood to help a patient somewhere,” Abdallah said.“With our partners we reached a milestone of over 100 pints and that means dozens of lives saved” The timing of the drive comes amid a challenging environment for blood supplies in Kenya as the country's blood bank situation is critical, facing a severe shortage due to low voluntary donation rates. According to recent reports, Kenya requires about 500,000 units of blood annually to meet clinical demand, but the collection remains far below this target. In mid-2025, the Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority (KTTA) stated that national storage capacity has improved (from ~24,000 units to ~65,000 units) thanks to new regional blood testing centres. There is heavy reliance on replacement donations (friends and family of patients) rather than regular voluntary donations, which carries risks of delayed transfusions and limited safety margins.
