Jamia Mosque Nairobi to Hold Lunar Eclipse Prayers Tonight

By urban Shihemi, September 7, 2025 Jamia Mosque Nairobi has announced that it will lead Salat Al-Khusoof (Lunar Eclipse Prayers) tonight following the Isha prayer, as Kenya prepares to witness a lunar eclipse. When a lunar eclipse occurs, Muslims are encouraged to perform the special congregational prayer, seeking closeness to Allah and reflecting on the signs of His creation. Jamia Mosque Nairobi Imam, Sheikh Jamaludin Osman, confirmed that the prayers will take place immediately after Swalatul Isha at the mosque. “We urge the Muslim community to come prepared and join in the Khusoof prayers as prescribed in the Sunnah whenever an eclipse takes place,” Sheikh Jamaludin said. Salat Al Khusoof and Salat Al Kusuf or Lunar Eclipse and Solar Eclipse Prayer  are one of the Sunnah Prayers offered by the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم "The Sun and Moon do not eclipse because of the death or life (i.e birth) of someone. When you see the eclipse  pray and invoke Allah" (Sahih Al Bukhari, 2.153) The lunar eclipse is expected to be visible in various parts of Kenya, marking a rare celestial event that carries both scientific and spiritual significance. According to astronomers, a total lunar eclipse is set to occur on Sunday, September 7, 2025, with peak visibility in Nairobi expected at approximately 9:11 PM EAT. The event, which will see the moon turn a reddish-orange hue, is often referred to as a "blood moon." In Islam, a lunar eclipse is considered one of Allah's signs, and Muslims are encouraged to pray special prayers known as Salat Al-Khusuf to seek forgiveness and mercy. The prayer is a sunnah (recommended practice) of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
