Jamia Mosque Nairobi to host Open Day on July 19 to foster interfaith understanding

By Abucher Mbarak, 10 July, 2025. Jamia Mosque Nairobi is once again inviting people from all walks of life and faiths to attend its annual Open Day, scheduled for Saturday, July 19. This year’s event, themed “Discovering Diversity and Hospitality in Islam,” aims to deepen public understanding of Islam, foster interfaith dialogue, and promote peaceful coexistence in Kenya’s increasingly diverse society. Organized by the Jamia Da’wah Department, the day-long programme will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and marks the eighth edition of the initiative since its inception in 2018. The Open Day has grown into a significant platform for bridging cultural and religious divides. Through interactive activities such as guided tours of Jamia Mosque—the country’s largest Islamic institution—faith-based exhibitions, and live observation of Muslim prayers, the event offers visitors a rare, immersive experience into the spiritual and communal life of Muslims. Attendees will also have the opportunity to engage with scholars in open Q&A forums, receive translated copies of the Noble Qur’an, and access a range of Islamic literature designed to clarify core beliefs and practices. “This event provides a unique opportunity for non-Muslims to receive authentic information about Islam from credible sources,” said Sheikh Ratib Abdinoor, the mosque’s Da’wah Officer. “In a time when misinformation is rampant, initiatives like this are essential in dispelling myths, addressing stereotypes, and encouraging mutual understanding.” He added that the theme reflects Islam’s universal message of compassion and inclusivity. “Hospitality is a core Islamic value. We want guests to not only learn but to feel welcome and respected. This event is a celebration of our shared humanity.” Beyond religious education, the Open Day is also seen as a vital tool for strengthening national unity and interfaith harmony. By opening its doors, Jamia Mosque reinforces its role as a pillar of openness and peacebuilding within Nairobi’s multicultural community. During a successful Open Day event held last year in October, over 800 participants attended and 31 individuals embraced Islam.
