Rukiya Mohamed Breaks Barriers as the Only Female Snake Handler in Kenya’s Coast Conservation Area

By Urban Shihemi, 24, 2026

From the quiet shores of Kiwayuu in Lamu County to international recognition, Rukiya Mohamed has carved out a place in a field long dominated by men, becoming the only female snake handler in Kenya’s Coast Conservation Area.

Rukiya’s journey is one marked by courage, discipline, and an unwavering sense of purpose. At a time when fear and misconceptions often surround snakes, she chose a path few women dare to walk—and excelled in it. Trained through the rigorous Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) paramilitary program, she broke through institutional and social barriers to take on one of the most demanding roles in wildlife conservation.

Her work places her at the front line of human-wildlife interaction along Kenya’s coast, where encounters between communities and snakes are common. While panic often drives people to kill snakes on sight, Rukiya approaches each call with calm expertise. She has rescued and safely relocated numerous snakes from homes, schools, and public spaces, protecting both human lives and wildlife.

Beyond rescue operations, Rukiya plays a critical role in community education. She engages residents on snake behavior, safety, and the ecological importance of reptiles, promoting coexistence over destruction. Through awareness and dialogue, she has helped transform fear into understanding and respect for wildlife.

Colleagues describe her as disciplined and fearless, while community members credit her with saving lives and reducing conflict between people and snakes. Her presence has also challenged long-held gender stereotypes in conservation and security-related roles.

As Kenya continues to strengthen conservation efforts along its fragile coastline, Rukiya Mohamed’s story stands as a powerful reminder that leadership knows no gender—and that knowledge, courage, and compassion can redefine how communities live alongside nature.
