Muslim Academy in Parkroad Nairobi has successfully conducted its fourth Student Elections, giving learners a valuable opportunity to actively participate in the democratic process by electing their school leaders.
The elections, held at the school’s grounds, were conducted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), lending credibility and authenticity to the exercise. Students cast their votes to elect a School President, a Governor, and Members of Parliament who will serve as class representatives.
The exercise mirrored a national election process, complete with ballot papers, polling stations, and presiding officers, offering students a practical civic education experience.
Milliam Gachihi, the Senior Elections Officer for Starehe Constituency, who oversaw the process, described the initiative as a crucial investment in Kenya’s future leadership.
“This election is an essential step in nurturing future leaders. By involving students in a structured democratic process at a young age, we are instilling values of integrity, accountability, and active citizenship,” said Gachihi. “It is encouraging to see such enthusiasm and orderliness among the learners.”
School Headteacher Rashid Abdirahman lauded the partnership with IEBC and emphasized the importance of leadership development within the school environment.
“At Muslim Academy, we believe leadership is not taught in theory alone — it is practiced,” said Rashid during an interview with Jamia Tv. “These elections provide our students with a platform to understand responsibility, teamwork, and service to others. We are proud to create an environment where their voices matter and their choices shape their school community.”
Parents were invited to observe the process, further strengthening transparency and accountability. Many commended the school for organizing a credible and well-structured election.
Mr Anwar, a parent and an elections observer noted that the exercise not only builds confidence among learners but also prepares them to become informed and responsible citizens. “This is how we shape a generation that respects democratic values,” Anwar said.
The newly elected School President, Governor, and Members of Parliament are expected to represent student interests, coordinate school initiatives, and act as a bridge between the administration and the student body.
