Temporary Reopening Of Rafah Border To Let Gazans Enter Egypt

By Habiba Hamisi, 3rd December 2025

The Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt is set to reopen in the coming days, providing residents of Gaza with an opportunity to cross into Egypt, according to Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the Israeli military body responsible for coordinating aid and movement in the region.

The reopening of the crossing will follow a coordinated arrangement with Egyptian authorities and will be conducted under the supervision of the European Union mission. This system is modeled on a similar mechanism that was implemented in January 2025, which ensured that the movement of people and aid across the border was managed safely and efficiently.

COGAT confirmed that Israel has granted the necessary security clearance for the crossing to operate, ensuring that residents can move without immediate risks to their safety. The move comes amid ongoing humanitarian concerns in Gaza, where residents face limited access to essential services, medical care, and other basic needs.

The reopening of the Rafah crossing is expected to provide temporary relief to thousands of Gazans seeking to leave the territory for medical treatment, family reunification, or other urgent reasons. Authorities emphasized that the coordination between Israel, Egypt, and the European Union is designed to manage the flow of people while maintaining security and orderly processing at the border.

While the reopening is a positive development for residents of Gaza, officials warn that the situation remains fragile, and careful management of the crossing is required to avoid congestion or safety issues. The temporary arrangement is also seen as a step toward improving humanitarian access in the region, highlighting the ongoing efforts of international bodies to support civilians affected by the broader conflict.
